What does Yuca, Nemo and Wish have in common? They are all top-notch, fantastic restaurants in Miami, Florida, offering residents and tourists the best in urban, chic and fine dining and they were all voted as the best top 10 restaurant in Florida.

The YUCA , which is an acronym for Young Urban Cuban-American, is renowned as being South Florida’s original upscale Cuban restaurant that features innovated Neuvo Latino cuisine, or as the locals like to call it – Neuvo Latino. YUCA’s style of cooking includes traditional Latin ingredients lincluding a wide variety of textures, flavors and colors that when all mixed together creates a unique cuisine and nothing compares to it outside of the Caribbean and Latin America. In 1989, YUCA opened its doors and has continued to grow in popularity and has attracted thousands of diners each year, from all over the world who want to have a great gastronomic adventure. YUCA is located at 501 Lincoln Road.

Nemo, located at 100 Collins Avenue, is all the buzz around Miami’s foodies. Nemo’s offers its patron an interactive kitchen with an open counter, creating a relaxed atmosphere. Chef Mike Sabin puts together unique combinations of ingredients achieving a consistently sophisticated and fresh cuisine; he plans his seasonal menus around the freshest produce and products available throughout the year. The 2005 and 2006 Zagat Survey named Nemo as one of America’s Top Restaurants. Nemo’s is the epitome of South Beach cool and with its slick metal bar, hip jazz and darkly stylish dining rooms, Nemo has a very inviting and alluring image, which no one can resist. Nemo’s is within walking distance of most Miami luxury hotels .

Wish is the receiver of the Mobil Travel Guide 4-star Award in 2001 and 2009 and is considered a AAA 4-diamond restaurant. The interior was designed by Todd Oldham, where he created both an exotic and cozy dining experience. The exterior consists of a magical, tropical garden that is one of the most romantic al-fresco dining areas in all of South Florida. The ‘Inner Garden’ evokes the lushness of the outdoor garden with tropical plants that delightfully surround the indoor dining area, creating a most intimate of dining rooms. Since Wish opened, back in 1998, the restaurant has garnered numerous awards for its imaginative cuisine under the direction of Executive Chef Marco Ferraro.

A reason I enjoy getting out of Singapore and driving in the countryside of Malaysia is that I can see tons of fruit trees growing in the compounds of people’s homes. Recently, I made a trip to Kukup, it’s a fishing town on the South-Western tip of the state of Johor. It was the season for rambutan and I saw many trees fruiting by the roadside. I also saw may roadside fruit stalls which reminded me of Singapore in the 50′s and 60′s. And from what I’ve heard, most of the Best Singapore Restaurants will peruse these fruit stalls and purchase the freshest fruits for their guests. These fruit trees and fruit stands remind me of when I was a child. Very fond memories.

In my kampong, I used to have many fruit trees. I remember climbing those trees was one of my favorite things to do as a child. I found the guava tree was the best for climbing because its branches were strong. I called the guava fruit ‘pak kia’ (literally meaning chicken droppings fruit). I had 2 types of fruit; one with pink flesh and the other with a white flesh. The seeds are extremely hard and not digestible. I remember mistaking eating some guava seeds and believe me, you don’t want to go through what I did. So, please, really, stay away from swallowing the seeds.

But, my most favorite fruit from the kampong days was the soursop. Our tree was a prolific fruit producer which produce a more tastier and bigger fruit than what I can buy today in the markets. They are actually hard to find in the markets because they ripen too quick and are expensive, so shoppers tend not to purchase them. I remember the fat green caterpillars that live on the trees, I liked playing with them, but they did not like playing with me.

When I walk around Mumbai, I keep in mind all the seven islands: Colaba, Fort, Parel, Byculla, Worli, Matunga and Mahim. They are testament to a single land mass being formed through successive reclamations. When I sit on the outside patio of one of the Best Restaurants Mumbai has, I can’t help but be amazed, but not surprised as the city extended up to Mahim until recently when the greater Mumbai has not completely evolved, or ever will completely evolve. Integrating with the city, the entire creek extending up to Bassien Creek in the north. I know it’s misleading to call Mumbai and island, for it’s no more an island in the full sense of geographical terms; it’s a true peninsula. Some are of the opinion that all the islands are a part of the mainland during the prehistoric days and that they appear to have evolved so due to volcanic actions.

As I sit here, drinking my Indian tea and looking all around, I also am amused at Mumbai’s name change. Mumbai was once known as Bombay. I prefer Bombay, maybe because I do have a fondness for Bombay gin, or that Bombay sounds more cosmopolitan, but I also like the mystic sound of Mumbai. For what I know, Bombay is a derivative of Mumbai Ai or Maha Amba, a patron goddess of the Kolis. And Mumbai’s meaning does have something to do with it’s bay. Mumbai is located on the shores of the Arabian Sea and it’s prosperity is largely due to its harbors. Even with the ‘back to origins’ name change, Mumbai has developed into India’s commercial capital with several leading industrial, financial and commercial business centers centrally located. It is, of course, the Gateway of India and has an outstanding culture and a civilization of different people. Today, as I finish my tea, I’m overwhelmed with this confluence of varied currents and cross-currents of my native country and am humbled at her achievements.

Johannesburg, population almost 4 million with over 7 million in the greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Area, is the largest city of South Africa. It is the provincial capital of Gauteng, which happens to be the wealthiest province of South Africa. The highest court, the Constitutional Court is located in Johannesburg. Witwatersrand is a mineral rich range of hills where Johannesburg is located, thus providing a major source of income of gold and diamonds. The O.R. Tambo International airport is the largest and busiest in South Africa, providing international travel.

During your stay in Johannesburg, you will be amazed at the many fascinating tourist attractions you can visit. The stunning, architectural designs and detail of the modern and historic structures are a must see for any visitor. There is a vast range of museums, churches, market areas, fancy shops, nightclubs and bars for your enjoyment, but you have to experience Johannesburg fine dining. The superb and creative chefs painstakingly prepare the most elegant dishes to be found. The beautiful restaurants and attentive staff make for a true dining delight.

On the flip side of the city attractions, but just as popular are the wildlife preserves and national parks found outside the city. The parks are designed to be as close to the animals’ natural habitat as possible. One very popular park is the Addo Elephant National Park, home to over 500 elephants. They share this beautifully landscaped exhibit with rhinos, antelopes and a number of different species of birds. If you are a hiker, you will want the Giants Castle Game Reserve to be on your itinerary. Not only will you thoroughly enjoy the hike, the fabulous scenery and the wildlife are an added bonus. You will see plenty of eland antelopes and Cape and Bearded Vultures, as this is the breeding site for these, not so pretty, large birds. All in all, Johannesburg has so much to offer for all visitors. Put this city on your priority list of places to see, enjoy it all, remember it always.
