Historical Look at Internet Speed

Many of us use our PCs, Macs or even cell phones to access the internet every single day. But have you ever thought to ask yourself how it all works? The Internet started as a small internetwork of military computers. The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), a division of the U.S. Department of Defense, laid the foundations for the modern Internet we know today.

By 1992, the network bandwidth of the Internet had increased 20 million times the bandwidth seen in 1964. In November of 1992 Delphi was the first commercial online service offering Internet access, and by May 1995 AOL, Prodigy and CompuServce came online.

Dial up Internet access started the modern Internet speed revolution. It was the only method of Internet access in 1994. Dial up allows a user to access the Internet through an analog modem and traditional telephone system. Dial up speeds began at 0.1 kbits per second. One kbits is equal to 1000 bytes of information per second.

Over the next few years Dial up slowly increased speeds up to 56 kbps. Did you know, in the 1990’s U. S. Federal Law limited Dial up Internet speeds to 53 kbits per second? The U. S. Government feared Hackers could breach U.S. Government networks and disappear before they could be traced by the proper authorities.

Dial up still depends on phone lines for the transporting data, and is used often in rural areas today. Soon dial up may become obsolete and will be replaced by Broadband Internet Access. A broadband connection allows for the transfer of data at a much higher rate than through analog.

Broadband is generally defined as data transfer rates greater than 256 kbit per second. There is not an official minimum bandwidth for broadband. Broadband internet access can range from 64 kbits per second up to 4.0 Megabytes of data per second.

Internet speeds continue to increase to meet customer demands. Internet Service Providers (ISPs) are building faster networks with the development of new technologies. By 1996 the first mobile phone had Internet connectivity, and not long after in 2008 studies showed that more people accessed the Internet via mobile phones than PCs. The development of 4G networks, which set peak speed requirements at 100 Mbit/s, help users connect to the Internet at speeds never before seen with a mobile device.

Mickey Rooney was married seven times in Vegas. Other early film stars to get married there included Rita Hayworth, Kirk Douglas, Fernando Lamas, Joan Crawford and Hollywood legendary couple Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward.

Singers and musicians have also found Vegas to be a good site for their weddings. In addition to James, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Wayne Newton and, of course, Elvis Presley were married in Vegas. In more recent years everyone from basketball star Dennis Rodman to Baywatch star Pamela Anderson to teen queen Brittany Spears have been married in Vegas.

Whether planning an all out wedding event with a honeymoon in a luxury las vegas hotel room or simply running away to elope, couples tying the knot in Vegas can consider themselves to be following in the footsteps of their favorite stars.

Children and Halloween

One of the best things about going back to school in the fall is the approach of Halloween . Children all across the US spend the month of October dreaming about costumes, candy, and parties as they look forward to one of the favorite holidays of the year.

While older kids may be spending more time planning the tricks they will play on October 31st, younger kids spend there time figuring out just what costume they want to wear — and how to convince their parents to buy it for them. While some parents have the skills to make costumes from scratch the elaborate details required by beauty and the beast costumes or super hero costumes, most kids would prefer a store bought costume, to ensure that everything looks exactly right.

No matter what the final costume looks like, Halloween is about fun. It’s about decorating jack-o-laterns, visiting haunted houses , and attending parties at school or a friends house. And, most importantly, it’s about trick-or-treating through neighborhoods or shopping malls or even zoos and amusement parks to collect candy and other goodies to enjoy for weeks after the holiday itself.

Hawaii Five-0 Remake Series

Remakes seem to be the thing right now. A few seasons ago Warner Bros. picked up a remake series of Beverly Hills 90210 entitled 90210. Now CBS has announced that they will be doing a remake of the popular cop show Hawaii Five-0. The cast, stars from Lost and Battlestar Gallactica, will have their work cut out for them as they attempt to modernize the show without shutting out fans familiar with the original series. No word yet when the series will air, but you can read more about the new series here.

Political Controversary Taking Over Miss USA… Again

For last couple of years, it seems as though the Miss USA pageant has become more about politics and less about the pageant. Last year, Carrie Prejean was faced with a question about gay marriage and this year Miss Oklahoma Morgan Elizabeth Woolard was asked about immigraton reform. Ultimately neither girl ended up with the crown, so it makes you wonder just how much emphasis is put on these questions. Perhaps they should stay out of politics and just focus on the pageant. More Trouble for Tiger

As if the sex scandal and estrangement from his soon-to-be-ex- wife weren’t enough; Tiger Woods is facing problems once again. This time the pain is physical. He is believed to be suffering from a bulging disk in his neck, although a CAT scan performed in the early part of the week should be able to confirm it. The injury, common among golfers, forced him to withdraw from The Players Tournament last week. With the proper treatment he should be able to return to golf within a few months. Orlando Bloom’s Home Burglary: A Deal is Made

In a trial that concluded last week, 18 year Alexis Neiers, aspiring model and reality star, pleaded no contest to the charges that she was part of the group that broke into celebrity Orlando Bloom’s home and stole several thousand dollars worth of property. Bloom’s home was not the only one hit. Celebrities Paris Hilton and Lindsey Lohan were reported victims as well. Neiers will be spending the next 6 months in jail followed by 3 years probation. “American Idol”: The End in Sight

For the last nearly 10 years, American Idol has been one of, if not the, top rated reality show. From it stars like Carrie Underwood, Daughtry, Clay Aiken, Mandisa, and many others have been born. However, as much as we hate him, Simon Cowell’s announcement that this will be the last season has had serious effects on the ratings. While “Idol” is still in the top 3, ratings are down nearly 20% from last year. Are we suffering from “Idol” burnout or are we missing Simon already?
