The Southwestern Company products have been changing slowly over time for a while now. That should come as no surprise when you look around at the major changes the world has gone through in the last hundred years alone, not to mention before that. It hasn’t just been the books that they carry that have come in and out of print since then. They have also acquired new books that upon inspection it was clear that they needed to completely revise before they could send them out with the student sellers. This has always been the upside for them. They don’t just get to sell the books, but they get to decide what the content is that they are selling.

Southwestern Company is particularly known these days for a particular book series that has helped quite a number of people. This is the Volume Library , a set of books that might at first seem sort of dull, but is actually very interesting. However, it was hard to navigate when Southwestern first bought the rights to it. There was no organization to the topics at all. It was all a scramble and there was no way to know where in the series the thing you wanted to look up was. They did a top to bottom revision of it, changing what subjects were in the series as well as the way in which they were ordered among other things. This quickly became one of their top selling books.

Around the same time they bought another book series called the Student Handbook. It was a small two book set, and most people really were only interested in the first volume. It was for the most part outdated and it was not all that good for many students in terms of student needs. Surprisingly it is also still a best seller despite the advent of the internet and the ability to find out any information from a computer. Their secret is that they update it yearly to keep it relevant with school systems . They have also expanded it a lot, up to a five volume set. This makes sense with the ever increasing knowledge kids need to know in this world.

My nephew is finally going to graduate. He has been a problem for my sister for years and we were loosing hope in him actually doing something positive with himself. He always leaned to the lazy side not putting much effort into much of anything, let alone school. Now he is going to be graduating from the International Business College in Fort Wayne, IN at the end of this semester. I am very proud of him and really never thought he would do it. Hoped he would, but this is truly a surprise. We can not figure out what kicked in but something did and we are sure glad. Not only is he going to be getting a degree, learned another language on top of it all he is graduating with honors. Now that I’ve gotten my reservations at hotels Fort Wayne I am going to plan my route.

I am taking the occasion of his graduation as an opportunity to go on a road trip and have some time to myself. It is going to be a really long drive taking two days minimum. I’ll be leaving Phoenix on a Tuesday morning to give myself plenty of time to get there for his graduation on Saturday. Leaving early on Tuesday I will be able to make it to Santa Fe, NM by late Tuesday afternoon and spend the night and Weds morning with an old friend there. From Santa Fe I’ll head north into Colorado. In Southern Co I’ll pick up some back roads heading north and east and should make it to Hays, KS on interstate 70 by late Weds. Hopefully I will be able to get on the road really early out of Hays, KS, if so I should be able to make it all the way into Fort Wayne by late Thursday night giving me the whole day Friday to spend with my sister, nephew and family.

Well now all the plans are in place i can focus on the perfect gift for this surprising achievement.

Good salespeople aren’t just born they’re made. Though there are qualities and characteristics that help to make a good salesperson, sales training is the best way to make the best salespeople. In company culture, this persistent falsity still holds true for many people. The research of customers and demographics, the money, the hard work, the creation of effective goals, the training from professionals are all things which go into making fantastic salespeople. Though earlier on in the history of sales, the stereotype that showing and up and doing a pitch might have been true, globalization and ever-improving business techniques are making this sales stereotype a thing of the past. Business relationships between a customer and company once used to be a loyal one that went on for many years, but not so now.

Technology has made this the case today, making it a very difficult world for small business owners especially who do not have the financial means or access to good sales process improvement that larger corporations have. Also, as customers have become more and more aware of how salespeople work and what their methods are, they have become harder to sell to. Sales training involves what methods are used to aid companies in training their people to improve their capabilities, conduct, and ideas, all of which will help them to better persuade people to make a buy. It is training people on how the relationship between a client and a salesperson should interact to make it a good experience.

A big part of why businesses experience problems stems from a lack of confidence in from the salesperson either in skills or whatever the product is. Other attributing factors come in the form of poor morale. And when sales are down, it also tends to make the pitches worse, and in turn the sales go down even further in a cycle that is hard to break.

One of the most basic of problems for the energy created by a wind turbine, is that the wind does not constantly blow, and this could result less energy production than the standard power plants or nuclear power plants, which harness up to ninety percent of the available energy. One of the best wind turbines, will at its optimum harvest just thirty percent of the energy that is potentially available. This has caused many of the production companies building turbines today to step up and find ways to increase the productivity of each turbine.

One of the aspects that the designers are focusing on is the length of each individual blade. Longer blades can increase the energy stored. Standard wind turbines today are designed with three blades that had before been three hundred and five feet in diameter. The newer designs will reach up to three hundred and thirty feet in diameter. This increases what is called the sweep area, the circular motion of the air that provides the energy for the wind turbine to capture. This increase constitutes an eighteen percent increase in the size of the turbines.

If the wind constantly blew and blew hard, then the size of the blades does not make a difference. Even at moderate rates, the energy output of each turbine is elevated. When the wind blows at the rate of seventeen miles per hour, the larger length blades will have the output go up by almost eight percent, as opposed to the smaller blades. The larger blades do not turn faster, but the energy they capture from the air that passes over them increases.

This is a great new aspect in that this can mean that areas that are not high wind will still be able to utilize this alternative form of energy. But there are some limits to consider, such that when the blades get longer, the more difficult it becomes to transport the blades from the factories in which they are built, to the top of the hills where the turbines are usually placed. And the production of these blades is much more expense. However, the benefits have been seen in the newer wind plants in the US states of Washington and Minnesota, as well as throughout the country of Denmark.

Unfortunately the under-estimation of the importance of musical education in public schools today is prevalent. Some institutions, such as the United Kingdom and Northumberland boarding schools are aware, that music and art education, as well as the teachers of those subjects, is and are important. In higher education systems such as universities and colleges, one of the largest and most dense of programs is in the music department. What is required of the professors and the teachers is immense, including technique, psychology and general education and knowledge of not just one instrument, but of all of them. History, composition, music theory, as well as the repair of instruments and the different methodologies of teaching is required. They must have knowledge of past and current trends and the repertoire contained in those trends and traditions. And for the students coming from public and private schools where the funding has been cut for art programs, once they reach university, the have a lot to learn.

The history of music is taught throughout their years at school, as well as the different styles and the way in which music has developed over time. Many of the ‘old school’ techniques are used by the composers, the jazz and rock musicians and even those that score music for television commercials, today. The social events that surround a given moment in history, influence the music being created at the time, such in the early days of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. Music is sometimes commissioned by the wealthy and sometimes written for the poor, by the poor. Centuries of cultures have been absorbed in the practice and the appreciation of music, for centuries and centuries. The study of the rhythms and the division, multiplication and the keeping of the count have all shown to increase the capabilities of those children in their science and math classes as well. Science and technology are utilized in the world of music, when one is discovering simply, what sounds good. Through the study of music, one also gains knowledge in the study of language. The act of translating a given ancient piece, sheds light on the meaning of the words for one thing, and the poetry of the time. Music programs should not be cut from school curriculum’s, and many are fighting to see that that does not happen.

Hong Kong is the cultural capital of South East Asia. There are many events that occur throughout the city from exhibits in the world of visual arts to dazzling festivals. Sports, theater, musical concerts and international dance companies…to consumer and product fairs where shoppers can find everything from flower seeds to computers. One of the local venues that is a draw for tourists staying in the best Hong Kong hotels, is the Museum of History. The museum was founded in 1975, and was the result of the split in the City Museum and Art Gallery. Many of the items in the collections at the museum date back to 1962 however, from before the split. For a short time, the new museum was located in Kowloon Park but now has a permanent home on Chatham Road, close to many other venues in the city, including the Museum of Science, making this a convenient stop on a tour throughout the city.

One of the exhibits running through the rest of the summer is the Retrospect, which details the last one hundred years in the history of China. For although there are thousands of years of Chinese history, the last one hundred have seen many enormous changes in the city and the culture, from economic changes to political, to the life of the citizens in general. Throughout the years following the Revolution in 1911, China and her people were not ‘bouncing back’ according to the intellectual thinkers and philosophers of the day, and a movement was begun to incorporate science and democracy into the daily lives of the citizens. With this came ideas that shattered the outdated social structures and questioned the traditional ways of the existing culture. In the later part of the last century, the country’s economic power rapidly developed, and the nation became revitalized in spirit as well as on the global map of technology and science. The Retrospective Exhibit at the Museum illustrates this transformation through the collection on show, and the lectures and seminars being given throughout the run of the exhibit and is a fascinating look at the history of a city and a country transformed.

When it comes to looking for the cities with the greatest five-star hotels, Goa is something to brag about. One of the smaller of India’s large cities, it is possible to claim a vacation here without the overwhelming hustle and bustle of the more crowded places. There is still the close proximity to the beach, as Goa sits on India’s west coast, and there are some wonderful natural habitats to visit, as it is rich in biodiversity. Its main source of income is tourism, and it fares considerably better than other cities in the region economically. This means a very stimulating and rejuvenating traveler’s experience.

Like the rest of India, there are hundreds of thousands of fascinating people who have lived here at one time or another. Considering it is one of longest continually-inhabited countries on the planet, the human record is long and remarkable. One interesting character from Goa is the former Director-General of Police Julio Francis Ribeiro. A bit of an enigma, this sturdy, tough-speaking agent of justice served a difficult post in very tumultuous times. He was in charge during the terrorist acts in the 1980s, and his leadership was uncompromising (according to his friends and enemies). Today, however, he has turned from fighting militants to fighting corruption.

In his new post, Julio Francis Ribeiro now serves in completely different capacities. No longer carrying a gun, which is a very important condition for any new work as far as he, and his wife, Melba, are concerned, he participates in radical community organization. So that one of the functions might be to mediate conversations between Muslim and Hindi girls after a local sewing workshop. This work is much less dangerous of course, but judging from the happiness exuding from the septigenarian’s frame, no less rewarding.

The savvy traveler visiting Spain will understand that five-star Barcelona hotels offer world-class service and luxury. Staying in one of the most beautiful and exciting cities in the world deserves excellent accommodations. The hotels here offer a sumptuous combination of old-world grace and new-world design. The sheer physical gorgeousness of the hotels reflect a careful attention to every detail, where living is an art. Food and rest are of upmost importance here, and a rejuvenated body and spirit are the goal. There is a delicate and intense magnificence to the city, and the social life is lively and invigorating. The appreciation of art and design are core values here, and it shows in the way the locals live.

It also shows in the books. One of the most exquisite book publishers in the world is Barcelona’s publishing house, Actar. Actar specializes in contemporary art, graphic design, and architecture. Their volumes are extremely distinctive, and it’s obvious that careful eyes on design oversee every aspect of the bookmaking. From the innovation and delightfully playful cover designs, to the incredible attention to detail on the binding, these are simply lovely books.

Actar = ACTivity + ARchitecture is their tagline, and it suggests not just a commitment to excellence in publishing, but to the thought contained in the books they publish. With an emphasis on works that merge theory and practice, there is an absolutely contemporary world view that’s being presented in the pages. Form and function meet in the design and content, to give the reader a constant awareness that this object about art is also itself a work of art. Their publishing house also has two other arms, Actar D, a distribution house, and ras, their gallery bookstore publisher. Actar has been around since 1931, and is well-respected for their cutting edge books on design, and the coming years will see some exciting new volumes from this Barcelona publisher.
