A Walk on the Avenida del Mar-Marbella, Spain
Posted by Cindy on November 2, 2009Marbella, Spain has attracted the wealthy and the famous travelers of the world for many years. Marbella is located on the southern tip of the country, on the coast of the Mediteranean Sea. The climate is temperate just about all year round and the beaches are phenomenal, so it is not so difficult to understand why this is one of the top destinations of people wishing to find rest and relaxation. The best way to view the the city is to simply walk around and take in the sights slowly as you pass.
One of the local treasures is the Plaza de los Naranjos, and it is located in the center of the city close to many of the luxury hotels. Marbella is known for the beautiful plazas and parks and this is one of the ones near the top of that list. King Ferdinand constructed the plaza in 1485, wanting to replicate the style of a Castilian Plaza. The City Hall is located within the plaza and is a site worth visiting, as the architecture and the rod iron work surrounding the building as well as the hand painted frescoes inside the building illustrate the talents of the city’s craftsman and artists.
Another beautiful place to walk around the Marbella is the Avenida del Mar. This is a walkway made of marble, that stretches from the center of the city to the Paseo Maritimo. Along with spectacular views of the Sea, you will pass gardens, fountains and a set of ten sculptures cast in bronze, works created by Salvador Dali. The sculpture garden is the result of purchase made by the city when the park was being renovated. This is a gallery walk, as many of Dali’s most famous pieces are located in this one small area.
The walk leads to the Puerto Banus, which too is graced with a Dali sculpture. This is an area that is consistently being renovated and developed with hotels, and many new stores and boutiques filled with clothing from some of top fashion designers of today. These are high end boutiques that are one of the draws for the wealthy traveler with some money to spend. Walking through Marbella again, is the best way to experience the beauty of this small Spanish city and will leave the you just waiting to return.
