The East Lothian City of Edinburgh in August
Posted by Cindy on August 13, 2009If one is looking for an East Lothian hotel, chances are one may be in the city of Edinburgh, Scotland. And if one is so lucky to be looking for that accommodation in the month of August, then chances are they are attending one of the many festivals that take in the city, under the all encompassing title, The Edinburgh Festival. This is a term that has come to describe many different events and festivals that take place during the month. Some of these include the Edinburgh Book Festival, the Jazz and Blues festival, the film festival, the Edinburgh Mela, and the Fringe Festival.
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the official, the largest of all the arts festivals that happen throughout the entire world. The festival began inf 1947, when as participants in the International Festival, eight theater companies showed up, and they were not invited, they crashed the International. Over the next few years, more theater companies began doing the same thing.
They would come to the International and set up on the outskirts, or on the fringe of the main festival. This had become so popular and so widely attended that by 1958 a separate organization was formed to handle the inquiries about the schedules of these shows that were happening on the fringe. The Festival Fringe Society was born, and provided ticket information, and a program that contained all of the Fringe shows.
What remains central to the original constitution to this day, is that the public was not give freedom to judge or keep check on the artistic nature or concepts of the companies and the performances they were doing. Oh, they could critique and comment, but this would have no effect on who was allowed to perform. It was wide open for artists to create and to express just exactly what they wanted to without interference from the outside world. When one goes to the Fringe Festival one will find companies from around the world, performing in every possible venue and on every street corner, from comedy, to freak shows, to musicals, circuses and children’s shows. This is one time that everyone should experience at least once in their lifetime.
