City of Leicester

I wanted to get away for the bustle and hustle of Leicester. I had purposefully booked a room in the City Hotel, because I have business there, but my business meetings didn’t last as long as I hoped, so I really needed to let the stress of the previous days go by. The concierge told me I’m not too far from a park or a garden, and that there are a few carnivals and music festivals happening because it’s spring. They told me that I could also find nice parks right here in the city, where I could relax and take it easy.

I took them up on their suggestion and did a little bit of exploring inside the city. I found Abbey Park, where a famous Cardinal once lived. Then with some good fortune, I stumbled upon Knighton Park which is located at the City’s University’s campus. Knighton Park is a nature reserve and a botanic garden. It was a pleasant environment right in the middle of the city. What an amazing surprise. I strolled around for hours without even realizing the time. Watching the students study in the garden and around campus brought back memories of my days as a college student. But, I didn’t have such a beautiful setting to study in. How I envy them, but how I’m so glad to have to not study up for exams.

I asked around about how a University is also a reserve. One person explained to me the the Leicester tries to incorporate concern for all the natural world environment into everything they do, like promoting recycling, creating ‘green’ spaces,  becoming more energy efficient and protecting the wildlife that’s in and around the city. He then pointed out the practical effects of these efforts, everywhere I looked there was evidence, from energy saving light bulbs in the market place, recycling centers in all the parks and even the City’s Football Club has gone ‘green.’

I had no idea that just taking a walk around a city that I knew nothing about would have a life changing impact on myself and now my company. I’ve decided to make all my employee environmentally aware of their surrounds and to make my company go ‘green.’ Thanks Leicester.
