New York City is an amazing place to visit, and offers any kind of diversion imaginable. There are plenty of things for every member of the family, with excellent museums, theatrical productions, live music, amazing restaurants, and fantastic people-watching. Some of the most amazing minds in art, literature, and science have been drawn to the city at one time or another. There are also those who fall out of easy categories, and create work that is entirely their own. One such person is Adrian Piper.
Born in 1948, she has made a huge impression on the international art world with her profound and confrontational performance pieces. Her work is focused on race and gender, and she has performed on the streets, in subways, and had pieces shown in galleries. In a city where it is increasingly difficult to make a living practicing art, she has managed to find a way around this by teaching philosophy for most of her art-making career, which spans over four decades. She received her B.A. from City University, and her PhD from Harvard. In 1987, Adrian Piper became the first African American woman to be tenured in the field of philosophy. She has taught widely, and written extensively, in the field of philosophy, and uses this background to inform her compelling, and ground-breaking works of art. She is also an accomplished yogi, and has worked with other practitioners like Tim Miller, who crossover into the performance art arena.
