Balearic Island of Cabrera

The Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain are an extremely popular vacation spot for people from around the world. The largest of these, the island of Majorca is by far the most famous and populated. There are three other primary islands and each one has unique cultural heritage aspects and scenic wonders. The 5 star hotels Balearics offer luxury accommodations on all of the islands and contribute to their status of popular tourist destinations. The island of Cabrera is one of the minor Balearic Islands, smaller than most and often overlooked because it is not one of the primary four. However, this little Mediterranean island is beautiful and has much to offer in terms of culture, the arts and beautiful beaches.

While it is not one of the four major islands, Cabrera is the largest of the minor Balearic Islands. It is located just south of Majorca and has traditionally been considered as a ferry cruise destination as opposed to a specific vacation orientation spot. The island has an incredible history and as is true for all of the islands, it has amazing beaches.

Some of the interesting historic aspects of the island include its use as a holding center for French prisoners during the Napoleonic wars. It had an unfortunate record with the prisoners as over 9000 were sent to the island and only 3600 survived their incarceration. It also holds a relevant position in the Spanish Civil war. In 1936 a Republic airplane crashed near the island. The crew that was onboard it was captured by rebel forces. Two Republican submarines were dispatched to the area and were able to reclaim the island from the armed soldiers. Another airplane crashed near the island during the Second World War. It was a German plane carrying out an African operative. One of the crewmembers who died was buried in a small cemetery on the island.
